Most pepper sprays are 2 million S.H.U., which is the most you can have. The potency of the spray will give you the confidence you need when out and about.
To make a good decision when choosing your pepper spray keyring you should know a little bit about what pepper spray actually is. Pepper spray is made of cayenne pepper. The oils are extracted from the pepper using a very high pressure process. Processing it this way leaves the active ingredient in pepper spray known as OC or OleoResin Capsicum. This super hot pure pepper extract is then broken down with an inert substance that reduces the SHU or Scoville Heat Unit to get it down to a useable SHU for a pepper spray keyring. SHU, as I mentioned, is a measurement that determines how hot something is. The scale goes from 1 million SHU up to 5 million SHU. 1 million SHU is detectable on the palette in concentrations as little as 1 part per million.
To find out if pepper spray is legal where you are, you should check with your local law enforcement office for restrictions that apply to your area. There are states where pepper spray is legal but there may be size, age or OC concentration restrictions. You should check on these restrictions as well.
