It is important to decide which products best suit your needs and there are several factors to consider. There are differences in size, spray pattern, active ingredients, and the effective distance. First, you can be sure of what the local laws pepper spray can affect your purchase. Although there are many online sources that list these laws, if you would have most certainly, your best bet is to call your local Attorney General, they will be able to refer directly to the appropriate statutes. It is then important to decide how the products will be used. Will you buy pepper spray to be carried with you, or will it be used for homeland security? Models designed for personal defense will usually around 10-17 grams or about 1 / 2 ounce. This pepper spray will usually contain 5 one second bursts and will be judged as effective at a distance of 10 feet. You will find that most of them will be complete with a small bag or a keychain attachment (do not worry they have a safety mechanism to prevent accidental discharge). These are fun to go with your keys while walking across a parking lot, in an easily accessible place in a bag or purse or on a waistband while walking or jogging. The larger pepper spray, typically 45-120 grams, about 2-4 grams, are not designed to run with you. These are designed for home defense and kept in a nightstand, on a shelf by the front door (of vision), or somewhere else, that would be a point of confrontation with an intruder to be. Pepper Spray in this category will not only increase the volume, but more importantly, to be effective in a much further distance of 18 meters.

Another important difference is the spray pattern, which typically is either a stream or a fogging action. The stream will deliver more of the pepper spray and a concentrated area can be effective over a longer distance, but requires a direct hit to the face. A smoke machine will be a larger area and may allow you a full or partial hall room in your house for example not infect.
